Ayos_Kim, at your service!

Since I switched blogging to WordPress from the “so 1996” Geocities (as Obet describes), I’m re-introducing my former colleague in my alma mater’s student publication- Kim (wearing blue on the photo). Presently a Sports correspondent of The Daily Tribune, he covered the Philippine Basketball League Silver Cup for this season.

Harbour Centre, displaying the heart of a true champion, trounced Hapee-Philippine Christian University (PCU), 86-73, to bag the 2007 Philippine Basketball League (PBL) Silver Cup title yesterday at the San Juan Arena.

The dynamic duo of Chico Lanete and Jonathan Fernandez stood at the forefront of the Portmasters who made a big rally midway in the fourth quarter which keyed their second straight title in the premier amateur league.

Lanete, the journey man from Lyceum of the Philippines who bagged the Finals Most Valuable Player plum, came away with 14 points, but it was Fernandez who delivered the baskets that mattered most for the Unity Cup titlists.

Fernandez, a National University standout, scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in that crucial fourth period assault for the Portmasters, who completed the sweep of the best-of-five series.

“We’re confident that we can win the title today. I just did what coach Jorge (Gallent) told me to do,” said Fernandez who was named 2007 Silver Cup Pivotal Player due to his red hot shooting all series long.

“My players didn’t want to prolong the series. So they worked really hard to win this championship game,” said Jorge Gallent who becomes the first mentor since Junel Baculi to win back-to-back PBL titles.

Harbour Centre team owner Mikee Romero was present during yesterday’s game and couldn’t hide his jubilation after the win.

“It was the team’s never say die attitude that won us the game. Jorge will always be my lucky charm,” Romero said.

The Teethmasters, meanwhile, struggled to keep up with title-hungry Portmasters as 2007 Silver Cup MVP Jason Castro didn’t get much needed support, missing the services of reliable pivot man Larry Rodriguez who sprained his left ankle during Game Two.

Castro finished with 19 points and grabbed four rebounds for the Teethmasters while Fantastic Freshman Mark Borboran scored nine of his 18 points in the last quarter.

Hapee-PCU actually led in the first quarter, 16-15, as Castro fueled the Teethmasters offensive attack.

But the Portmasters tightened up their defense in the second quarter, where they also began hitting their strides. Fernandez struck for eight points and Lanete added five markers in the second canto where the Portmasters managed to lead by nine at the end, 40-31.

Still, the Teethmasters just would not give up.

With Castro, Borboran, and Beau Belga at the firing end, the Teethmasters unloaded a 21-18 salvo in the third period to move threateningly close at 52-58 at the end of the period.

Castro, who won the conference’s MVP plum earlier, Borboran and Belga teamed up for 13 points during that brief salvo by Hapee.

But the tough Portmasters held their ground, thanks mainly to the sweet shooting Fernandez who went steady from the foul line and deadly beyond the arc.

Fernandez gave his best when he led in the Portmasters’ 28-21 counter attack to seize control of the game.
